Unmasked

Betty Greer

Unmasked is a figurative painting capturing the moment when we finally decide to stop trying to be what other people need us to be. It expresses the courage it takes to let go of old identities and step forward to be our true self.

The figure is pulling away a mask that’s tight, uncomfortable, and hard to remove. The tension in the hands and face is intentional. Letting go of old patterns so you can feel accepted, safe, or liked takes effort and can feel painful and uncertain.

The background represents the old life — the emotional space where people-pleasing and survival patterns lived. The circles suggest containment, routine, and the feeling of being held in place by what once felt necessary.  They remain intact as the figure moves forward, emphasizing the contrast between who the person was and who they are becoming.

I painted Unmasked to offer hope and encouragement, especially to those who are struggling. It’s a reminder that choosing to be yourself can be a powerful step toward freedom.
