Cyndi Lauper - True Colors (Official Lyric Video)
True Voice oil painting by Betty Greer_edited.jpg

Behind this painting

This painting is about learning to speak honestly — and discovering that your voice and your needs matter just as much as anyone else's.

For a long time I shaped what I said around others — choosing words carefully, holding back what I truly felt, and saying what I thought people needed to hear. It felt like the considerate way to move through relationships.

But over time something became clear. I was allowed to say no. I was allowed to express what I needed. My voice didn't need to be filtered through fear or shaped around keeping others comfortable.

That realisation changed something fundamental in me. Speaking honestly felt unfamiliar at first, but with time it became one of the most freeing things I have ever learned to do.

In the painting, the softness in her face reflects that history of holding back. The colour of her mouth draws focus to the act of speaking — not with confrontation, but clearly, and with a growing certainty in her own needs.

A moment to reflect

What might become possible for you if you trusted your voice a little more?
