Cyndi Lauper - True Colors (Official Lyric Video)
True Voice oil painting by Betty Greer_edited.jpg

Behind this painting

This painting is about finding your voice and learning to speak openly and honestly.

For a long time, I filtered what I said, choosing my words carefully and saying what I thought people needed to hear. Over time, this made me believe I wasn't entitled to have my own thoughts or feelings.

After removing my mask, I recognised that I had held my voice back too. To feel completely free, I had to learn to say no and set boundaries. Speaking honestly felt uncomfortable at first, but over time I learned how to express what I needed.

In the painting, I chose muted tones for the woman's face to suggest a history of being constrained. The mouth is vivid and colourful. It represents the freedom to say no, set a boundary, or speak openly without fear.

We can learn to express what we think and feel without confrontation, with the growing certainty that our voice is worthy of being heard.

A moment to reflect

What might become possible for you if you trusted your voice a little more?
